Organizational Information

HISTORY: The organization was founded in 1992 under the name Hispano American Association. Since then, it has undergone many profound changes. The name was changed in 1994 to ALAS and after a period of inactivity was reestablished in 1995. Due to the determination of the new executive board, ALAS is once again recognized within the Miami University community and through its numerous social cultural activities is one of the most well-known groups on campus.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the organization is to promote awareness of Latin American and Spanish cultures through social, cultural, and community events. Membership is open to all with an interest in Latino cultures.

ACTIVITIES: ALAS sponsors and co-sponsors many events throughout the academic year. Some of those are: picnics, Latin dance lessons, Latin topic film series, lectures, Hurricane Mitch relief drive, donations to Colombian earthquake victims, Hispanic Heritage Month, International dinners, member retreats, Chicago Volunteer Project, Hispanic Conference, Su Casa, Superviesta, Locura, Carnaval, Living Water Ministry, and many more.

COUNTRIES REPRESENTED: ALAS currently has or has had members representing the following countries: Colombia, Nicaragua, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Honduras, Ecuador, Spain, Chile, Brazil, Bolivia, Argentina, Mexico, Cuba, Venezuela, just to name a few...
